Job Description
Our manufacturing client is expanding its engineering team and seeking a Senior Controls Engineer to join their new Grand Rapids, MI facility. This is an opportunity to step into a high-impact role where you'll lead the design and programming of advanced automated equipment used in fast-paced production environments. What You'll Be Doing
- Lead the design, development, and programming of automated control systems aligned with customer and internal standards
- Develop PLC programs from scratch across multiple platforms
- Design and configure HMI systems to support user-friendly machine operation
- Integrate and troubleshoot vision systems and servo motion control applications
- Power up, electrically debug, and validate automated equipment for optimal performance
- Collaborate with mechanical and electrical design teams to enhance safety and minimize rework
- Support onsite equipment installation, startup, and customer troubleshooting as needed
- Drive continuous improvement through innovative controls redesign and process optimization
- Ensure compliance with safety standards and best engineering practices
Job Requirements
Required Qualifications
- 5–10+ years of engineering experience within the automation industry
- Strong PLC programming experience (Allen Bradley, Siemens, GE, Mitsubishi)
- Hands-on experience with HMI platforms (Maple, Ignition, Allen Bradley)
- Experience integrating vision systems (Keyence, Cognex, Teledyne, Dalsa)
- Working knowledge of servo systems (Allen Bradley, Siemens, IAI, SMC)
- Ability to program and commission control systems independently
- Strong communication skills and ability to collaborate across cross-functional teams
- Self-starter with a proactive, solution-oriented mindset
Preferred Experience
- Experience in custom machine builds or regulated production environments
- Background in designing controls systems for custom automated machinery
- Exposure to full project lifecycle engineering, from concept through installation
- Experience supporting onsite startups and customer-facing troubleshooting
- Familiarity with safety standards and electrical compliance requirements
Contract positions
Will be employed and paid hourly by iMPact Business Group. Benefits (medical, dental & vision) are available after 90 days of employment.
Permanent placed employees
