Director of Underwriting
Lead Underwriting Excellence in a Key Leadership Role

Our client is actively seeking an experienced Director of Underwriting to join their leadership team in driving strategic underwriting practices and supporting the company's profitable growth. This role will oversee the entire underwriting strategy, operations, and team management, ensuring that pricing, policy development, and risk management align with organizational goals. With a commitment to innovation and continuous improvement, this individual will have a significant impact on product line profitability, underwriting standards, and team performance. This is an excellent opportunity for a strategic, growth-oriented leader with a strong background in property and casualty underwriting.

Key Responsibilities

Risk Management:
  • Apply advanced predictive analytics and deep market insights to shape underwriting policies, pricing, and strategy.
  • Develop and maintain risk selection criteria based on competitor analysis and market trends.
  • Monitor market trends, regulatory updates, and emerging risks to adapt the company's risk strategy.
  • Prepare risk assessment reports for senior management and the board, conducting stress tests and scenario-based assessments.
  • Recommend product or policy adjustments to support growth while managing exposure.
Marketing and Distribution Management:
  • Identify opportunities to drive growth, profitability, and portfolio diversification.
  • Build and sustain relationships with brokers to align opportunities with the company's strategic objectives.
Leadership and Operations:
  • Oversee hiring, training, and development of underwriting staff, fostering a culture of expertise and accountability.
  • Identify underwriting tools and process improvements to streamline operations and support profitable growth.
  • Establish standard procedures to maintain efficient, compliant operations aligned with corporate risk tolerance.
  • Champion company initiatives, including new technology adoption and process enhancements, while contributing to strategic and financial planning.

Job Requirements

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Insurance, Finance, Economics, or a related field.
  • At least 7 years of experience in property and casualty underwriting, with a proven track record of leading an underwriting team.
  • Advanced knowledge of commercial property & casualty products, including regulatory frameworks, actuarial concepts, loss control, and competitive industry trends.
  • Exceptional communication and relationship-building skills, with a focus on service-driven interactions and solutions orientation.
  • Strategic thinker with a results-oriented mindset and demonstrated ability to influence others effectively.

Preferred Skills

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with a clear focus on financial objectives.
  • Experience with underwriting automation tools and process improvements.
  • Ability to inspire change and align team goals with company initiatives.
