Our client, a well-established and growing organization in the Greater Grand Rapids area, is seeking a seasoned Controller to lead their accounting operations with strategic insight and a hands-on leadership approach. This is a pivotal role for a finance professional who thrives in fast-paced environments and is passionate about driving financial accuracy, integrity, and performance across multiple operating entities.
As Controller, you'll serve as a key financial steward of the organization, overseeing internal reporting, compliance with GAAP standards, and leading a dynamic accounting team. You'll partner directly with senior leadership to align financial operations with broader business goals, delivering analysis that drives informed decision-making. Key Responsibilities:
- Lead, mentor, and manage the accounting team and Accounts Payable Supervisor, fostering a positive and accountable work environment.
- Oversee the monthly and annual financial close process for all operating entities.
- Ensure accurate, timely, and compliant financial reporting in accordance with GAAP and internal policies.
- Manage and optimize financial systems for the preparation of internal and external financial statements.
- Establish, maintain, and enhance accounting policies and internal control procedures.
- Analyze financial data and provide actionable insights and strategic recommendations to senior leadership.
- Collaborate with FP&A to support the preparation of the annual operating plan.
- Lead and participate in process improvement initiatives across accounting and reporting functions.
- Conduct special projects and support cross-functional initiatives as needed.
Job Requirements
Required Qualifications:
- Minimum of 10 years of progressive accounting experience, with supervisory responsibility.
- Expert-level knowledge of accounting fundamentals and accounts payable processes.
- Strong command of GAAP and corporate financial reporting standards.
- Demonstrated leadership and team development experience.
- High proficiency in Microsoft Excel and accounting software systems.
- Strong analytical mindset with excellent attention to detail.
- Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills.
- Self-motivated, process-oriented, and capable of thriving in an agile, growth-focused environment.
Preferred Attributes:
- Experience in a multi-entity operating environment.
- Exposure to ERP system implementation or upgrades.
- CPA or CMA certification (preferred, not required).
- Background in manufacturing, distribution, or operational finance.
- Experience working closely with FP&A and executive teams on budgeting and forecasting.
