Our client, a growing public accounting firm in West Michigan, is seeking a Controller-level candidate to support a diverse portfolio of nonprofit organizations. This role is ideal for someone who thrives in both hands-on accounting and advisory work, and who enjoys serving as a strategic partner to mission-driven clients.
You will step into an established book of business and act as an outsourced controller for multiple nonprofits. The work is a balanced blend of hands-on accounting, advisory, analysis, forecasting, and client guidance. The ideal candidate brings strong nonprofit accounting expertise along with public accounting experience.

✔️Full-time/direct hire position

Location: This role can be based out of our clients' Holland, Muskegon or Grand Rapids offices.

What You'll Do
  • Provide strategic oversight of full-cycle client engagements for nonprofit organizations
  • Lead advisory discussions, delivering insights that guide budgeting, forecasting, and financial planning
  • Manage grant reporting, fund accounting requirements, and compliance activities
  • Review financial statements, controls, and accounting processes for accuracy and improvement opportunities
  • Build financial models and budgets to support client growth and operational decisions
  • Mentor team members and collaborate cross-functionally while maintaining high client service standards
  • Participate in informal business development as part of relationship building with existing clients
  • Work in a hybrid environment with in-office time expected (local travel between firm offices as needed)

What We're Looking For
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Business, or related field
  • 5 to 8 years of nonprofit accounting experience (public accounting background required)
  • Strong understanding of fund accounting, grant compliance, and nonprofit reporting frameworks
  • Experience acting in an advisory or outsourced controller capacity
  • Ability to interpret complex accounting issues and present findings clearly to client leadership
  • Excellent communication, organization, and prioritization skills
  • Experience with QuickBooks Online, Sage Intacct, or NetSuite preferred

Why This Opportunity Stands Out
  • Join a growing, mid-sized public accounting firm with strong roots and expanding service lines
  • Enjoy a balanced environment offering career growth and resources without the 'big firm' feel
  • Attractive work-life balance
  • Supportive leadership structure with partner involvement in high-level technical matters
  • Opportunity to make a direct impact across a broad portfolio of nonprofit clients serving diverse communities
